Blue light contributes to digital eye strain

High-energy visible light (HEV light) is high-frequency, high-energy light in the violet/blue band from 400 to 500 nm in the visible spectrum. Due to it’s short-wavelength, high energy blue light scatters more easily than other visible light and our eyes can’t easily focus on it. When looking at computer screens and other digital devices this unfocused visual "noise" reduces contrast and can contributes to digital eye strain.

Sources of HEV (High Energy Visible) Light:

  • Digital Screens (TV, Computers, Laptops, Smart Phones, Video Games, Electronic Games)
  • Fluorescent Lighting
  • LED Lighting
  • Sunlight

Why do your eyes hurt?

Harmful blue light contributes to tired eyes, poor night vision, loss of sharp contrast vision, light sensitivity and glare. Studies also show it may possibly contribute to risk of onset cataracts, macular degeneration, problematic sleep patterns, headaches and focus. Harmful blue light is the blue-violet wavelengths found between 415nm - 455 nm on the light spectrum and is believed to be most toxic to retinal cells.

Blue light exposure may increase the risk of macular degeneration.

Blue light penetrates all the way to the retina and laboratory studies have shown that too much exposure to blue light can damage light-sensitive cells in the retina. This causes changes that resemble those of macular degeneration, which can lead to permanent vision loss.
